Walter Barnes

March 25, 1930 — January 3, 2014

Walter L. Barnes, passed away at the Integris Grove General Hospital in Grove, OK on Friday, January 3, 2014 at the age of 83. Walter was born on March 25, 1930 in Delaware County, OK, the son of the late Servetus Beaty and Bertha Ellen (Fouts) Barnes. After Walter attended school in Indianola Schools, he went to work for his uncle in the timber business and also helped surrounding neighbors doing some farm work. At age 16 Walter moved to western Oklahoma and western Kansas where he learned his trade of masonry. He met and married Betty Allen in Liberal Kansas marrying on May 31, 1951. Soon after their marriage Walter was drafted into the United States Army serving his country as a supply handler in the Korean Conflict. After he was honorably discharged in 1953, he and Betty moved back and forth from northeast Oklahoma and western Oklahoma working. The couple made their permanent home in 1968 around the Jay area. Walter retired in 1992. He later met and married Lois "Boots" Earp in 2001. He was a hard worker all of his life and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, three brothers, four sisters, and one son Lester Eugene Barnes. He is survived by his children: Mary Jackson and her husband Alvin of Zena, OK, Steve Barnes and his wife Terri of Miami, OK, Ronald Barnes of Jay, OK, and Betty Jo Rutherford and her husband Monte of Jay, OK; one sister Beatrice DeMoss of Siloam Springs, AR; 18 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be held at the Eucha Free Holiness Church in Eucha, OK on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 2PM with Rev. Rusty Martin, presiding. The burial will follow at the Indianola Cemetery in Jay, OK. The family will greet friends from 6PM to 8PM on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Jay, OK. Arrangements are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay, OK. Friends and family may leave notes of encouragement by viewing Walter's Book of Memories at www.honoringmemories.com. Casket bearers will be Earl DeMoss, Darrell DeMoss, Chris Gibson, Harry Gibson, Ollie Kinslow, Jr., Arik Barnes, and James Baker.
