Solomon Downing

SOLOMON HENRY DOWNING

March 18th, 1943- October 18th, 2020

Solomon Henry Downing was born on March 18th, 1943 to Corine (Wooten) Downing and Roy H. Downing in the Pryor Creek area Chelsea, Oklahoma. He attended elementary school at the local grade school in Pryor Creek and finished his education at White Oak High School. After high school, Solomon enlisted into the National Guard where he remained until 1965. Solomon Downing met Janet Inez Landis in 1963 which lead to them getting married in 1964 in Vinita, OK.

Solomon always loved being around family. Reunions and holidays allowed him to spend time with the many siblings, cousins and lifelong family friends. After a brief stay in Omaha, NE where 2 of his children were born, Solomon and Janet Downing moved back to Vinita, OK. Where they both retired from the State Of Oklahoma. Solomon and Janet Downing moved to Joplin, MO in 2014 where they were able to enjoy their retirement.

Solomon will always be OU Sooners #1 football fan. He would make sure that he would either watch the game on TV or listen to the game on the radio. He loved his Sooners and would usually never go anywhere without his OU Sooners hat. Solomon also loved to play the guitar. Blues and Gospel music was his genre he preferred to play, and he loved getting together with his siblings and sing gospel music.

Solomon Downing leaves behind his wife Janet (Landis) Downing of Joplin, MO; Dana (Downing) Wallner and Richard Wallner of Madison, WI; Niagel Downing of Joplin, MO; Corwin Downing of Joplin, MO. Solomon Downing also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren numerous nieces, nephews and many close family friends.

Solomon Downing also leaves behind several siblings: Oscar (BO) Downing of Nowata, OK; Paul Downing of Glenpool, OK; Gladys Hatter of Tulsa, OK; Juanita Banks of Tulsa, OK; Farris Downing of Vinita, OK, Bobby Downing of Vinita, OK; Verna Rogers of Bartlesville, OK; Gracie Carter of Bartlesville, Ok; Karen Watson of Independence, KS; Vina Ramsey of Vinita, OK; Valorie Downing of Tulsa, OK

Solomon Downing was preceded in death by the following family members: Parents Roy and Corine (Wooten) Downing; Sister Betty Mae Downing, Brother John Downing; son Maurice Downing.

Services will be at 11:am Friday, October 23, 2020 at the Trinity Baptist Church with Pastor Farris Downing officiating. Interment will follow at the Shady Grove Cemetery.
