Paula Hurt

Paula Sue Hurt passed away at her home in Zena, OK on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at approximately 9:30 a.m. Paula was born on April 10th in Bristow, OK, the daughter of Floyd Edgar Murphy, Jr. and Elizabeth (Olschewski) Murphy. She graduated high school from Okmulgee, OK and attended the University of Oklahoma, majoring in dance. After attending OU for several semesters, she moved to Muskogee and began working as a telephone operator. While she worked as an operator, Paula attended NSU in Tahlequah and graduated with a Bachelors of Education and post graduate degrees. During her time at NSU, she met Derald Hurt; and went on to marry him on April 15, 1975 in Sand Springs, OK. After graduation, Paula taught at Salina, OK and Northeast Oklahoma VoTech in Prior. Paula and Derald both taught in Wyoming before settling in Burlington, Kansas, where they spent a majority of their eduacation careers and raised their family. Upon retirement they settled in the Zena area of Grand Lake where Paula continued to leave her mark on students, teaching off and on in the Jay and Ketchum school districts. She was full of energy and enjoyed dancing, boating, the lake and sun. Most of all, she loved to be around her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Floyd Edgar Murphy, Jr. In addition to her husband, Derald, Paula is survived by her two children: Angela Hurt of Nashville, TN, and Aaron Hurt and his wife Elizabeth of Franklin, TN; her mother Elizabeth Harrington of Grove, OK; her four granddaughters: Aubrianna, Anastasia, Aeryn, and Avalon Hurt; and numerous other relatives and friends. Services will be held Wednesday, June 19th at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Grove, OK. Arrangements are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove, OK. In lieu of floral arrangements, Paula requested memorial contributions be directed to cancer research organizations or charities.
