May 21, 1905 — April 17, 2007

Mildred Adelaide Evans was born on May 21, 1905 in Lafayette, Indiana. She was the oldest child of Frank and Hattie (McHarry) Barnes. Later they moved to Forest City Illinois where Mildred graduated high school and moved to Arkansas where she taught in a one room school house for a year. She gave that up and sought other pursuits. Some time later, she met and married Harry Heim. She and Harry were married in Illinois but traveled around the four state area following Harry's job with International Harvester. On July 4, 1932, they had their only child, a daughter Alice (Heim) Schreiber. She was born in Rogers, AR; Mildred's Stepson Harry Joe Heim was lost at the very beginning of World War II over the English Channel in one of the first U.S. planes shot down. Millie, who was interested in fashion, started several dress shops for ladies in Aurora and Springfield Missouri. When Harry died in 1955, she started traveling beyond the four states representing several clothing lines, during this time; she met and married her second husband Elmer Evans. They eventually settled in Grove and opened the Evans Casual Shop downtown, which they owned and operated together for over thirty years. In 1979, her daughter Alice joined her in running the shop until they sold it in the 1990's. All of those members of the family previously listed preceded her in death. Mildred survived by her three grandchildren and their spouses. Rick and Kelly Schreiber of Grove, Joe and Debbie Schreiber of Parsons, KS, Mike and Cathie Deiker of The Woodlands, TX. She has twelve great grandchildren, Sara Schreiber Sanny, Joey Schreiber, Mali Schreiber, Amanda Schreiber, Chelsea Schreiber, Taylor Schreiber, Amy Deiker Hennessy, John Deiker, Erick Schreiber, Patrick Schreiber, Spencer Schreiber and Katy Schreiber. She is also survived by her nephew and his wife, Stanley and Shirley Driver of Wichita, KS, and her niece Kay Jeffers of Arkansas along with another nephew David Driver of San Antonio, TX with many many great Nieces and Nephews all over the Country. Mildred led a long and interesting life. When ask about some of her early memories, she always included riding in a horse and buggy with her grandfather who was a country doctor and making the rounds with him. Sometimes when her grandchildren needed some help on a school project involving history, she was able to contribute personal stories including marching in a parade for women's suffrage, being involved in politics when Woodrow Wilson was president, and having dinner with Will Rogers at a golf country club in Arkansas. Mildred was involved in many civic minded activities for Grove. One of her favorite achievements was ordering municipal Christmas decorations for the city of Grove. She was always a booster of the Grand Lake area and she enjoyed her participation with the Miss Grand Lake pageant through her store. She loved getting to know and dress many of the contestants and several Miss Oklahoma's. She loved her family, her customers, and the Grand Lake area. She will be missed by all who knew her.
