Martin Kay

Martin Bennett Kay, “Marty B” was born on August 24, 1946 in Vinita, OK to Bennett & Dixie Kay. He was born on South Scraper while his Dad was seating visitors at the Vinita Rodeo. He passed away on December 15, 2020 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, OK with both of his daughters nearby. Marty was the father to Staci Kay of Vinita and Traci Langley of Claremore. He was also known as “Pops” to his first grandson, Skilar Miller, of Stillwater as well as Coleman and Kayci Langley of Claremore. He was an ornery brother to Glydene McDonald of Ponca City who preceded him in death and Benna Bivins, living in Claremore. He was also preceded in death by both parents.

Growing up, Marty B. was an avid hunter of all animals and he loved to fish at Grand Lake. He especially loved to catch Crappie! He always told fond stories of hunting with his Dad and his Uncle Dick Walker, plus many others throughout the years. He even made the Vinita Daily Journal as a youngster when he killed 2 rabbits with 1 shot! (Yes, there were witnesses) Marty also had a way of connecting with wild animals and often made them into pets.

Marty graduated from Vinita High School where he was active with FFA. He had lots of great, longtime friends from High School along with his friends from Trinity Baptist Church. All through his life, Marty continued these friendships and remained in contact with many. Just a few special friends we know to mention are: Kody Miller, Jimbo & Pam Shellenbarger, Barbara Jean and Bunny Meyers. He often talked about missing his friends that had already passed on as well as the old-timers. We know he has rejoined them now and is enjoying catching up and telling stories. Marty B. was a great storyteller and could always spin a good tale! He was always so smart and up-to-date on the daily news and current events. He loved to watch sports, especially football, hunting and boxing. He also did his best to catch live wrestling matches, baseball, soccer, kart-racing, and basketball games when his grandkids were playing. He was one of their biggest fans. Not only was Marty B. generous with his grandkids, but he also supported many diferent charities. Many of you have probably received fresh fruit or goodies in the mail from him over the years as well.

In 1965, Marty joined the US Air Force and spent the next 4 years serving. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran who believed deeply in honoring Veterans. His daughters, Staci and Traci, are asking that donations, in his honor, be sent to The Foundation for Exceptional Warriors instead of flowers for the family. When asked who had the biggest influence over his life, Marty replied, “U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Government.” He also spent 17 years working at the U.S. Post Office in Vinita. Many people in the town of Vinita have fond memories of Marty B. delivering their mail.
