Ludie Hitchcock

Ludie Emma (Dilday) Hitchcock passed away quietly on December 26, 2009 at Forrest Manor Nursing Home in Dewey, Oklahoma. She was born December 1, 1915, in Clarksburg, Tennessee to Sheridan Elwood and Visie Ann (Petty) Dilday. Her family moved to Oklahoma in 1918 and she attended elementary schools in Broken Arrow and Pawhuska. In 1930, the family moved to Bartlesville. After graduating in 1933 from Bartlesville High School, Ludie married Glen Hitchcock at the First Baptist Church of Bartlesville where she was a member for over 75 years. She worked as a secretary for the Superintendent of Schools until 1940. Her three children were born in the following years, and in 1951 she went back to work as a secretary at Phillips Petroleum Company. She retired in 1972 after more than 20 years of service. Glen, also a retiree of Phillips, died in 1998. Ludie was active in the First Baptist Church including the Women's Missionary Union and Sunday School. She was a volunteer at the Bartlesville Visitor's Center, a member of the Good Earth Garden Club, and a past member of the Jane Phillips Sorority. She particularly enjoyed the Garden Club, her friends in bridge, and various kinds of stitchery. She gave her three children her time, energy and spirit as they grew up. Her sisters and their children were also very important to her life and who she was. For decades she noted each day's events in her many calendars. Ludie is survived by her beloved and special daughter, Linda Sue Hitchcock of Vinita, Oklahoma; her son and daughter-in-law, John David and Beth Cinda Hitchcock, The Woodlands, Texas; her son, Stephen Glen Hitchcock of Bartlesville; grandson, Zachary David Hitchcock, and step-granddaughter, Beth Cathryn Calderón Emory of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by her twin sister, Ruth Dennis, who has been a fundamental part of all of Ludie's life; her brother-in-law, Dwight Feese, six nephews, four nieces, and many great nieces and nephews. Ludie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glen, three brothers, two sisters, and two sisters-in-law. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 3:00 pm at the First Baptist Church of Bartlesville with Dr. Joe Dan Fowler officiating. Contributions as a memorial to her life may be made to the First Baptist Church of Bartlesville and to the Home of Hope in Vinita, Oklahoma.
