Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove, Oklahoma 918-786-2261.Ellen "Lucille" Vernon, 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 8, 2017 at her residence in Grove, Oklahoma. Lucille was born on December 14, 1927 in Carthage Township, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Roy and Cora (Hobbs) Linder. Lucille graduated from Turon High School in 1946. She graduated from Grace Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. After graduation, Lucille worked in California as a nurse before returning to Kansas. Lucille joined the United States Air Force as a nurse, she served as a 1st Lieutenant during the Korean War. After her honorable discharge, Lucille was an active volunteer for the Red Cross while living in New Jersey, Germany and Minnesota. Lucille was extremely proud of being a registered nurse. She had remained in contact with classmates and enjoyed sharing stories of their school days and early professional career. Lucille and her close friend Shirley Chalmers would try to get together once a year. They had talked about graduating with their eight classmates. They paid $125 for the entire three year program that included their room, board, tuition and uniforms Lucile said they did receive a check during their last year, $5 a month. Lucille was united in marriage to Bobby S. Vernon on January 8, 1955 in Hutchinson, Kansas. Bob preceded her in death on May 14, 2002. Bob and Lucille moved to Grove, Oklahoma in 1962 where she continued her nursing career as the night duty charge nurse at Grove General Hospital and the Director of Nursing at Grand Lake Manor Nursing Home in a career that spanned three decades in Grove. She was very involved in a variety of community and civic organizations including; member of the First United Methodist Church, Home Demonstration Club, Delaware County Republican Women and Epsilon Sigma Alpha - Zeta Alpha Chapter. The activity that took most of Lucille's time was Girls Scouts of America. Lucille received her 50 year pin for her services. Additionally Lucille received the Thanks 1 and Thanks 2 pins, the highest honor for volunteers in the organization. During the 50 years, she impacted hundreds of girls through a variety of roles, including the sale of over a million boxes of cookies. She was a troop leader for both of her daughters and "encouraged" both of them to achieve their 1st Class Rank. Lucille enjoyed staying busy and was always working on a variety of arts and craft projects. She crocheted afghans and gave out almost 200 towels every year as Christmas gifts. She enjoyed quilting, painting and scrapbooking. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband Bob, parents, three sisters, five brothers and son Richard Lee Vernon. She leaves behind to carry on her lifetime of smiles and hard work; three children, Louis Vernon of Grove, Mary Ellen Weeks of Las Vegas, NV and Annetta Gallegos and husband Michael of Denver, CO, one sister Gladys Smith and husband Palmer of Tyler, TX and one brother Orival Linder and wife Jean of Clay Center, KS. Lucille was blessed with five grandchildren; Andrew, Annetta Marie, Jason, Steven and Zachary and two great grandchildren; Jaina and Mara. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5-7 pm, Thursday, June 15, 2017 Services will be held at 10 am, Friday, June 16, 2017 both held at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Grove, Oklahoma. Lucille will be laid to rest beside her husband and son in Buzzard Cemetery. Online condolences can be made by viewing Lucille's Book of Memories at www.honoringmemories.com.
