Joseph Edward Downey Funeral services for Joseph Edward Downey will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 23, 2206, at the First Christian Church of Nowata. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Nowata. Services are under the direction of Benjamin Funeral Service of Nowata. Joseph Edward Downey was born April 11, 1922, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Charles and Dahlia Downey. He died September 19, 2006, at his home in Edmond after reaching 84 years of age. Joe graduated from Bartlesville schools, attended and played football, as a receiver at OU for two years. Shortly after Pearl Harbor was attacked he joined the United States Navy and was a pilot during the war. On January 22, 1945 he married Mary Kay Pendleton in Dallas, Texas. Upon separation from the Navy in 1945, they moved to Nowata. Mr. Downey worked for Phillips, in Bartlesville, and was transferred several times to Canada and other locations around the country, but, always returned to Nowata, where he considered home. Joe was an avid golfer and loved to work in his gardens around the home. While living in Canada he developed a love for fishing and hunting. He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Land Managers, and was a regional land manager for Phillips. Preceding Mr. Downey in death are his parents, Charles and Dahlia Downey. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of the home in Edmond, a son, John C. Downey, of Oklahoma City, a daughter, Janet Whitney, of Sagle, Idaho, four grandchildren, Joe and Rory Whitney, Renee Downey, and Danielle Kodad, two great grandchildren, Trystin and Kylie Kodad, other relatives, and friends.
