James Hughes

James "Jim" Hope Hughes, 91, of Bartlesville, OK passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at his home. He was born May 18, 1919 in Guthrie, OK, the son of Luther Martin Hughes and Olga (Hope) Hughes. Jim was a graduate of the Ponca City High School class of 1937 and enrolled at the University of Oklahoma in Norman and joined the Army Air Corps. As a flight instructor, Jim had the task of teaching English Pilots the art of flying. Later assignments had Jim flying supplies to allied forces throughout the China, Burma, India theatre. After the war, Jim returned to Oklahoma where he was united in marriage to Flava Martin on April 28, 1946 in Ponca City and then completed his engineering degree at the University of Oklahoma. Upon graduation, Jim was employed by Phillips Petroleum. While working for Phillips in Washington D.C., Jim earned a law degree from George Washington University. Returning to Bartlesville, he was a Patent Attorney for Phillips until his retirement in 1985. After his retirement from Phillips, Jim became President of Fractionation Research Inc., retiring again in 1995 at the age of 75. Jim was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bartlesville, honored member of the Presidents Association of the University of Oklahoma, Lifetime member of the OU Alumni Association, member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, lifetime member of the George Washington University Alumni, member of CBI Veterans Group and a member of the Washington D.C. Bar Association. Jim is survived by: his wife of 64 years, Flava M. Hughes; nephews: Don Tillman of Inman S.C., Dr. Steve Martin of Tulsa, OK and Greg Martin of Portland, OR. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be forward to: the University of Oklahoma Foundation; 100 Timberdell Rd.; Norman, OK 73019-0685. Services to honor Jim will be 2:00 pm, Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at the Colonial Chapel of the Neekamp-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Bartlesville.
