James Head

October 16, 1928 — June 7, 2008

James (Jim) R. Head of Grove, OK has taken his place with the Lord on Saturday, 7 June 2008. His life was full; he had a huge influence on many friends and family. Jim was born in Springfield, Missouri; after one year the family subsequently moved to Tulsa where he was raised. He graduated from Tulsa Central High School then earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering at Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater. He was a brother in the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Upon graduation, he went to work at Standard Oil in Tulsa, creating their Patent Search department. At night, he obtained his J.D. from the University of Tulsa Law School. He and his long time friend Paul Johnson created the "Head and Johnson" law partnership, growing the firm from 1956 for 40 years. He was still working with clients until April 2008. Jim was an avid fly fisherman taking several trips to catch the illusive trout, bass, and salmon. Golf was one of his favorite challenges; he worked hard throughout the years to constantly improve his game, just like an engineer! He enjoyed working in his wood shop building and carving treasured projects for family and friends. Jim was the coach of a Little League Baseball team, appropriately named the Cardinals (his favorite team). As a past member of the Windycrest Sailing Club, he enjoyed racing lightning class sailboats with his sons on Lake Keystone. His first trophy was the "Tail End Charlie" which then motivated him and his team to constantly improve their technique. Over the years, his memberships included Toastmasters of Tulsa, Republican Party of Deleware County, Rotary Club in Tulsa, and the American Bar Association, Patent Bar, and the Oklahoma Bar Assocation. Jim has always been very active in celebrating life with the Lord through his active participation in John Knox Presbyterian Church in Tulsa for many years, and most recently with the Cornerstone Church of Grove. Jim and Ruth Ann have been very active with building the church and spreading the word of the Lord with their special "12 Step Programs", Prayer and Bible study Groups, and many activities within the community. Jim had just finished his book "Warped Wings" about the patent fight between the Wright Brothers and Glenn Curtiss. Fascinated with the engineering of flying machines he had been working on the book for several years. The family that Jim and the Lord will be watching over are his wife of 56 wonderful years, Ruth Ann, his 3 sons and 2 daughters, Steve and Nette Head of Bedford, NH, John and Missy Head of Santa Fe, NM, Jane and Richard Dugbo of Overland Park, KS, Randy and Diana Head of Springdale, AR, and Teresa and Bruce Borden of Rowlett, TX. His strong Christian influence will be missed by his 9 Grandchildren, Danah Redmond, Michael Head, Rachael Head, Rebecca Head, Summer Ann Borden, Chelsea Borden, Crystal Diaz, Tiffany Garrett, and Robby Fox, 10 Great Grandchildren, Christopher, Courtney Ann, Schyllor, Robert, Aubryn, Preston, Ashton, Kayden, Autumn, and Chloe, his siblings, Richard and Lois Head, Caroline Briggs and Judy and Dick Gwinn. The viewing will be Monday, 9 June 2008, at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, 711 S. Main, Grove, OK. There will be a grave side service at 11:00am, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 at Memorial Gardens, 51st and Memorial, Tulsa, OK. There will also be a celebration of his life at a memorial service at Cornerstone Church of Grove, 501 E. 13th St., Grove, OK. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Cornerstone Church of Grove Building Fund, 501 E. 13th Street, Grove, OK 74344.
