Jack Phillips

Jack E. Phillips, age 82 and longtime resident of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2015, at his home. Jack Ewart Phillips was born August 18, 1933 in Durham, North Carolina. He was the son of Ewart Spurgeon Phillips and Edna G. (Farmer) Phillips. He attended Duke University graduating with a B.S. in Chemistry. In 1961, Jack worked in the Washington, D.C. Patent Office for two years which led to his decision to become an attorney. He attended George Washington University where he received his Juris Doctorate. In 1964, Jack relocated from Washington, D.C. to Bartlesville where he was employed with Phillips Petroleum Co. in the Patent division, chemicals area. In 1970, he became Associate General Patent Counsel and Trademark Counsel for Philips Petroleum Co., the title he retained until his retirement in 1996. Of note, Jack was one of the writers of the original patent process for the growth of vaccines via the yeast cell. On June 26, 1965, Jack married the love of his life, Doris (Eckert) Coulter, in Bartlesville. Mrs. Phillips preceded Jack in death on November 18, 2001. Jack had continued his residence in Bartlesville following her death. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church (now Bartlesville First Church). He was on phone duty each Monday morning during the last years of his life. He was also a member of the church's Board of Trustees. He served on the church's Memorial Committee as well as participating in past years in the church choir. Other activities included 45 years of dedication to the YMCA Board of Directors; and the Board of Family Crisis & Counseling; and Board direction of a Native American Medical Clinic. In 2002, he was elected to the Oklahoma Hall of Fame Bar Association, Patent Section. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris; and his brother, Bill. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Sally (Coulter) Loomer and her husband, Gordon, of Austin, Texas; and a grandson, Shane Christopher Adler and his fiancée, Madelyn Gonzalez, also of Austin. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jack's memory to the Project Transformation, c/o Bartlesville First Church, 4715 Price Rd., Bartlesville, OK 74006 or to The Journey Home, 3406 S.E. Kentucky, Bartlesville, OK 74006. Open visitation will be held on Saturday and Sunday from 1:00-8:00 PM and on Monday from 9:00 AM-8:00 PM in the Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home, 710 S Dewey Ave. Family will be present to greet friends on Monday from 6:00-8:00 PM. Services will be held on Tuesday, September 29, at 10:00 AM in the Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home. The Rev. Tari Carbaugh will officiate.
