Hugh Smothers

Hugh "Sonny" Smothers, 89 year old, Grove area resident passed away Wednesday July 31, 2013 in Claremore, Oklahoma, following an extended illness. Hugh was born on December 1, 1923 in Flippin, Arkansas to George and Rebecca (Ray) Smothers. After high school he received his bachelors degree in science from the University of Tulsa. Hugh Also proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps. Hugh married Mildred (Proffitt) in Jenks, Oklahoma. He worked for Sun Oil most of his life as a business manager and accountant. Hugh and Mildred traveled overseas and Hugh worked in several different countries, including, Saudi Arabia, the Sudan, and Morocco. While there, they mentored children from the embassies and armed services. Hugh was a very skilled carpenter and worked construction as a hobby, even building his first house with Mildred. Hugh was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, as well as ten siblings. Hugh is survived by four children, Becke Kidwell, of Zena, Oklahoma, Pegge Smothers of Zena, Oklahoma, Sunni Coombs of Zena, Oklahoma, and Neal Smothers and wife Betty, of Houston, Texas. Hugh is also survived by a sister, Lucy Young, of Jenks, Oklahoma, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Graveside Services for Hugh will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Zena Cemetery in Zena, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers donation may be made in Hugh's name to the Grove Human Society Notes of encouragement for the family may be left at www.honoringmemories.com Services are under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home Grove, Oklahoma.
