Dorothy Logan

Vinita resident Dorothy Darrough Logan, 80, loving wife, mother grandmother, aunt and friend, died November 13 in her home. Born September 8, 1930 in Oklahoma City, Dorothy graduated from Classen High School. She attended Rockford College in Rockford, Illinois for one year where she was elected president of the freshman class. She later transferred to the University of Oklahoma where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. At OU Dorothy was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta social sorority, which she served as president. She was vice president of the YWCA and received the bronze Letzeiser award for scholarship, leadership and service. On October 31, 1953, she married J. Duke Logan. The couple resided in Norman for three years. During this time she earned a teaching certificate and taught for one year at Midwest City School. In 1955, the couple moved to Vinita, Oklahoma. She taught fifth grade for one year at Hall Halsell before giving birth the first of four children and devoting herself to motherhood. Logan served on the board of directors of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, the Vinita Day Center, ROCMND Youth Services, and Vinita Unlimited. For many years she chaired the Vinita Red Cross Blood Mobile, served as coordinator of the AAUW/Green County University Women Puppet Show and was a popular Sunday school teacher at the First United Methodist Church. She is a recipient of the Vinita Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award. In her later years, she joined a local book club, which she greatly enjoyed. Dorothy also dearly loved the mountains of Colorado, spending countless glorious summers at the family cabin on the Frying Pan River. Dorothy's beautiful smile and warm disposition made her a friend to all who knew her. She was completely genuine and genuinely loved. Dorothy is survived by her husband J.Duke Logan of the home; daughter Liz Logan and husband Bow Bailey, of Vinita; son Leonard M. Logan IV and wife Dorene, of Vinita; son James Duke Logan II of Ozark, Arkansas; daughter Mary Logan Wolf of Oklahoma City; grandsons John Seidenberger of Norman and James Seidenberger of Vinita; sister Ruthie Darrough Johnston of Vinita; and sister Anne Darrough Travis of Wichita, KS; and extended family. She is preceded in death by parents Paul G. and Margaret A. Darrough; brother Paul G. Darrough Jr.; and sister Lina Darrough Koelm. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 26, 2010 at 11 am at the First United Methodist Church, 314 West Canadian, Vinita, Okla.
