Deward J. Pitts, 88 year old well known rancher and former Vinita restaurant and motel owner, died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Rosewood Terrace. He was born May 4, 1921 in Big Cabin to Albert and Libby (Seney) Pitts. Deward was a graduate of Big Cabin High School, and was a World War II Veteran serving in the United States Army for 6 years. Deward married Pauline Harris in 1941, she preceded him in death in 1989, together they owned and operated Deward and Pauline's Restaurant and Motel on South Wilson in Vinita. Deward later remarried to Mary Elizabeth (Osborn) Briley, she preceded him in death in 2005. After retiring from the restaurant and motel business, Deward became a full-time rancher, and was a member of the Polled Hereford Association. Deward enjoyed working his cattle, coffee time and visiting with friends. The family includes: his son Duane Pitts and wife Sandrea of Grapevine, Texas, a grandson, Travis Pitts and wife Lorraine of Vinita, granddaughter, Alanna Pope of Hitchcock, Texas; great-grandchildren, Aaron and Benjamin Pitts of Vinita; a brother, O'Gene Pitts of Virginia, a sister, Rueldine Lauchner of Wichita, Kansas, and his brother in-law Norman Harris of Bluejacket. Preceding him in death were his parents, wives, Pauline and Mary, siblings, Doyle, and August Pitts and Ravanell Harris. The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Eddie Wrinkle officiating. Interment will follow at the Big Cabin Cemetery.
