Delvin Simmons Sr.

June 2, 1935 — August 14, 2012

On August 14, 2012, Delvin Lee Simmons passed away and went home to be with his Lord and Savior. He was at the age of 77 and surrounded by his loving family at his home. Delvin was born near Shidler, Oklahoma on June 2, 1935 to James and Beatrice (Hobbs) Simmons of Webb City, Oklahoma. He attended school in Shilder, Oklahoma until the 9th grade. At that time he quit school to help on the family farm. At the age of 18, he joined the United States Army and serving during the Korean War. Upon discharge, he returned to Osage County Oklahoma and soon met the love of his life. On June 23 1956, he and Edna Mae London of Fairfax, Oklahoma were united in marriage. To this union, two children were born; Delvin Lee Simmons, Jr. and Darla Jo Simmons. Delvin worked as a mechanic and attended Okmulgee Vo-Tech were he completed the course of Fuel Injections and Diesel Starting Systems. In April 1965, the family moved to Alabama where Delvin was employed by Peabody Coal Company. He started out as a mechanic and later promoted to Truck & Tractor Foreman. He transferred to Oklahoma in March 1971. He retired from Peabody Coal Company in July 1980 to become a full-time rancher and farmer at their home in Craig County. He and Edna worked side-by-side farming their own land share-cropping, raising soy beans, corn, milo, wheat, and raising beef cattle. During this time Delvin was the owner/ operator of Simmons Alternator and Starter Service. Delvin retired from farming in 2002 and ranching in 2006. After retiring, he purchased a saw mill and took on a hobby he loved doing - making furniture. He enjoyed cutting trees, running them through the saw mill, drying the wood and then making beautiful furniture for his family. He enjoyed making all kinds of items from a bow and arrow made out of sticks to beautiful dining room tables and chairs. His final hobby in his life was to begin a pecan orchard. He enjoyed working with the trees, by planting, grafting and mowing around them. He spent hours driving around on his mule. Delvin was preceded in death by his parents, James and Beatrice, brothers Bill Simmons, Leon Simmons and Sister Linda Englert Survivors include his wife Edna of the home, son Delvin Jr. and wife Betty, daughter Darla Whisenant all of Vinita, grandchildren Justin Simmons, and wife Bridget, Amanda Riley and husband Adam, Jamie Gaylord and husband Dave all of Vinita, Leslye Chase and husband Steven and Ashley MacDonald and husband Jeff all of Claremore and eleven great-grandchildren; brothers, Carl Simmons of Vinita, Timothy Simmons of Tulsa; sister, Rosanna Hanning of Tulsa. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 16, 2012 at the Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 17, 2012 at Timpson Chapel Cemetery.
