Delphia Lee

Delphia Louise Conner Lee, age 76 died August 10, 2006 at her home in Nowata after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. Delphia was born December 26, 1929 in Bernice, Oklahoma to Millard Leo "Bob" and Fairy Dubois Conner. Education was an important part of her life, there were many teachers in her family and she attended a small two-room community school in the Dennis community in Delaware County. She graduated from Grove High School, received an Associate of Arts degree from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, and Bachelor's in Education degree from Northeastern State College at Tahlequah. She became a beloved elementary school teacher and taught in West Palm Beach, Florida, Bartlesville, and Nowata Oklahoma, and hearing from former students was a constant delight for her. Delphia married Bryan L. Lee on June 8, 1957 in Bartlesville. They enjoyed 47 wonderful years together before his death in 2004. They had two children and four grandchildren. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Nowata, and served in numerous civic and charitable capacities in Nowata. Among them, a long-standing involvement with the Nowata City-County Library, La-Kee-Kon Garden Club, Better Homes and Gardens Club, FOCAS (Friends of Community and Schools) and as a board member of Regent Bank. During her teaching years, she was a member of both the Oklahoma and National Education Associations. The Nowata Chamber of Commerce honored her as Nowata Area Woman of the Year in 1996. Delphia greatly enjoyed traveling and along with Bryan traveled extensively throughout the United States and around the world. She was also keenly interested in reading, history, and in her family. Throughout her life, she maintained friendships with those from her childhood and college years and regularly attended reunions of school friends. She is survived by son BC Lee and granddaughters Conor, Caroline, and Caitlyn of Tulsa, and daughter Melissa Lee Richier and son-in-law Chris and grandson Alex of Pearl River, Louisiana. She is also survived by her sister Donna Fields of Grove, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends and family members. Delphia was preceded in death by her husband Bryan, her parents, and two brothers. Services will be held Monday, August 14, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Nowata. Visitation will be Sunday, August 13, 2006 from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at Benjamin Funeral Home in Nowata. The Lee family requests that memorials in Delphia's name be made at Nowata City-County Library or the 10-33 Emergency Team. Online condolences may be left at www.honoringmemories.com.
