Alice Askew

Alice Ann Askew passed away peacefully on Friday, May 12, 2006. She was born in Catoosa, Oklahoma on February 18, 1931 to Robert Lee (Sr.) and Ruth Avanelle Heard Cambron. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Nowata at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2006, followed by a private family graveside service at Greenhill Cemetery in Muskogee. Arrangements are under the direction of the Benjamin Funeral Home, Nowata. The Cambron family moved to Nowata when Alice Ann was five years old. For grades 1 through 7, she attended rural schools at Adair, Rutherford, and Fairview, being taught by her mother at the latter two schools. In 1944, the family moved to town and Alice Ann attended the Nowata Grade School and Nowata High School, graduating in 1949. Following graduation, she worked as secretary for Delos Tillotson, long-time Nowata attorney. Then in 1950, she began working as a secretary for Phillips Chemical Company in Bartlesville where she met Richard Graves Askew, whom she married on March 13, 1953. Following her marriage, she continued working for Phillips until 1954, at which time she became a stay-at-home mom and perfected her career as a helpmate to her husband and a nationwide homemaker - from Bartlesville to Pasadena, CA in 1956, then to Westfield NJ, back to Bartlesville, to Summit, NJ to Overland Park, KS to Houston, TX and back to Bartlesville in 1974. Alice Ann was an active participant in numerous local and national organizations. In the Bartlesville Genealogical Society she served one term as President and held other offices throughout the years. In the United Daughters of the Confederacy, she twice served as Chapter President and was Chapter Treasurer for the past many years of Cherokee Chapter #1737. She also served as President of the Oklahoma Division and as the Treasurer of the Granddaughters Club at the General level of the organization. For her work in researching and publishing Memorials and Monuments of the Oklahoma Division UDC, she received the UDC's Jefferson Davis Medal, and for outstanding accomplishments in serving both her Chapter and the Oklahoma Division of UDC, she was awarded the Winnie Davis Medal. She belonged to and served as Regent of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Bartlesville Chapter. In addition, Alice Ann donated countless hours of volunteer work at the Bartlesville Public Library and the Family History Center, was Vice Chairman and Treasurer of the White Rose Cemetery Board and put together a Historical Scrapbook of the Cemetery. She served as Treasurer of the Embroiderers Guild of Bartlesville and Secretary of the Nowata Historical Society & Museum as well as Editor of its Newsletter. She enjoyed researching family genealogies and published three family genealogy books. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Bob Cambron, Jr. She is survived by her husband Richard, son Ben Askew & wife Teresa, Ben's children Calle & Cambron Askew, son Marc Askew & wife Stacey, Marc's children Lauren & Garrett Askew, brothers John Cambron and Ben Cambron, sister Marilyn McCarty, numerous nieces and nephews, and many loving friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Nowata County Historical Society - Museum Fund, P.O. Box 87, Nowata, OK 74048 or to the Bartlesville Public Library - Bartlesville Local & Family History Department Fund, 600 S. Johnstone, Bartlesville, OK 74006.
